The Feast of the Annunciation has been celebrated in the Church at least since the fourth century. You can understand why. On this day we celebrate that the “word became flesh.” Christmas happens only after the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy. The scene of the angel greeting Mary has been painted by dozens, even hundreds of artists over the centuries. A major feast! We remember in particular on this feast how the plan of God operates — namely, with human cooperation. God had a plan but needed Mary’s “yes” for that plan to come to fruition. The same is true in our life. God has a plan for us, a plan for our happiness. But unless we say “yes,” cooperate with that plan, it won’t happen.
