Someone recently pointed out the similarities between the home in Nazareth and Garden of Gethsemane. In the home a young girl responds to the will of God for her: “May it be done to me according to your word.” In the garden a weary prophet prays, “Not my will but yours be done.” Since the Bible tells us that Jesus “grew in wisdom, age and grace” doubtless his mother’s willingness to go where God was leading was a powerful example in his life growing up and when his time of challenge came he was ready. Heeding the will of God wherever it leads us is our challenge as well. Like Jesus we must learn from Mary that even doing things which seem beyond us are possible when we rely on the word of God.
