The Bible teaches us to become like God. “Be Holy for I, the Lord, am holy,” in the book of Leviticus. “Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect,” in St. Matthew. “Be compassionate as your Father in heaven in compassionate,” in St. Luke. We can’t be like God as Creator, nor as Savior, nor as the one who steers the planet and the stars. Jesus teaches us that the way we can be like God is by forgiving. His contemporaries objected, “Who can forgive sin but God alone.” Jesus responded that we all have the power to forgive. But it’s not easy. In fact, forgiving someone who hurt us is not a one time thing but something we must do again and again — 77 times!
