“What are you willing to give me?” That is the question Judas asked. Whenever we find ourselves asking “what’s in it for me” we are asking the Judas question. Any sports fan can tell you that when a member of a team focuses on his playing time or the amount of points she is scoring the team is doomed. A team has to think about “we” not about “me.” Judas was thinking about his personal benefit … and betrayed the most loving master one could possibly want. We live in a society which idolizes the individual. This has led to a loss of thinking about the common good. When our emphasis is “what’s in it for me” we are betraying God’s presence in the world.
