“If the prophet had told you to do something extraordinary, would you not have done it?” These words addressed to Naaman, the Syrian, should resonate in the hearts of believers. They speak of the temptation we all face to imagine that God is to be found in the extraordinary, the miraculous, the unusual. In fact, God is most often hidden in plain sight in the ordinary stuff of life. The people of Nazareth could not accept the divine mission of Jesus because he was too ordinary, too much like them. During our prayer today let’s look at ordinary life — work, school, home, neighborhood — and find there the presence and action of God. Weeds in the parking lot are divine revelation once we learn to see.
