“Whatsoever you do to the least, that you do unto me.” Jesus is, of course, a brother to us all but he claims a particular kinship with “the least,” with those who are suffering and hurting. Our normal tendency is to relate in a more personal way with those who are like us, part of our “tribe.” The parable of the Sheep and the Goats asks us to expand our understanding of who is “our own.” For Jesus, everyone has a claim on us, particularly those who are suffering. Just as we do all that we can to make sure that our siblings have enough to eat and adequate housing, Jesus dares us to imagine that there isn’t anyone out there who isn’t our kin.
