Azariah’s prayer is a plaintive plea bemoaning all of the loss in his life. He no longer has a country, no group he belongs to, no place to worship. All he has is God. The point of the prayer is that having God is sufficient. St. Teresa of Avila expressed that same prayer much more succinctly: “Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, All things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.” In our prayer during Lent we can examine all of those other things we rely on for our happiness. Most of these are good things — family, good health, security. But even when they are taken from us “God alone suffices.”
