I remember the boys giving Sister Sirnan a hard time. She was teaching us the catechism and told us that God was omnipotent: “God can do anything.” “Can God make a rock he can’t lift? Can God make a square circle?” Needless to say, Sister Sirnan was not pleased with us. It turns out that Jesus teaches us that there is something that God can’t do — God can’t forgive us unless we forgive. “If you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.” If we hold onto our resentments and grudges we tie God’s hands. This Lenten season provides the perfect opportunity to look at those old hurts and wounds. Then we need to ask God for the strength to forgive.
