Some of those first followers of Jesus objected to his teaching on the Eucharist. “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” I suspect that if you ran the teachings of the Church by people nowadays the one that people would object to would be about the Church itself. “I believe in one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church.” How can the Church be holy when it is filled with sinners? when there are abusive priests? when racism and patriarchy are alive and well? when there is history of violence? The answer is similar to the one that Peter gave — yes, it is hard to see the holiness of the Church at times but where else can we go to receive the words of eternal life?
