When St. Paul healed a cripple in Lystra the people declared, “The gods have come down to us in human form.” People then as now imagined that for the gods to be present something extraordinary needs to happen. The coming of Jesus, called the incarnation, changed our understanding of the presence of God. Jesus was God-with-us, Emmanuel, not only when he was working miracles but when he was walking the dusty roads, sharing a meal, talking with friends, even taking a bath. Even in the most ordinary of times doing ordinary things Jesus was the presence of God. We must learn to crack open our view of reality to find God in the ordinary. In every step we take we are walking on holy ground.
