The Church does not look on the fifty days of the Easter season as starting at the high point of Easter and then gradually rolling down the hill. Rather, Easter and the fiftieth day — Pentecost — are looked on as twin poles with the energy of the season flowing between them. In these last weeks of Easter season we put more attention on the Pentecost pole. In doing so, we are reminded that Easter is not an old story about something that happened to Jesus long ago. Rather, due to the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives we have direct access to the grace, power and joy of the Resurrection. Thus, the prayer of these days: “Come, Holy Spirit.”
