“Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary?” Jesus cures us of the idea that finding God requires moving into the realm of the unusual, the extraordinary, the exotic. Like the people of Nazareth we have a hard time understanding that God is to be found in the experience of the ordinary. This ordinary bloke that they grew up with was, in fact, the presence of God in their midst. And, since Jesus promised “I will be with you always” we can be sure that he can be found in our ordinary lives as well. When Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz says “there’s no place like home” she was (unwittingly) speaking a great spiritual truth. There is no place like home to find God. Every person that we meet, particularly those who are hurting, is another opportunity to encounter the divine presence in the world.
