Often you hear people say that they don’t “like the Old Testament.” However, it was the “Old Testament,” that is the Hebrew Bible, that the followers of Jesus turned to in order to understand his identity and mission. For example, when St. Paul wants to preach the gospel in Pisidian Antioch he tells the history of salvation from the Hebrew Bible. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people… Jesus himself quotes from Psalm 41 in order to situate Judas’ betrayal in the larger context of God’s will at work in the world. Our understanding of, and relationship to, Jesus will be incomplete if we don’t appreciate the entire Word of God revealed in the Bible, both Old and New Testaments.
