“What happened that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” This question addressed to the Jesus by the apostles resonates. There is a line from the play Jesus Christ, Superstar. “Why’d you choose such a backward time. And such a strange land? If you’d come today. You could have reached the whole nation. Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication.” We tend to think in terms of numbers, of size. We imagine that the more people the better. Jesus thought instead of human connections, of personal encounter. He was not interested in creating a mass movement but in changing an individual heart. As we think about the Church today are we impressed by size or by the quality of the heart?
