There was a movie a few years ago, Don’t Look Up, which spoofed the human tendency to ignore some problem or issue that we don’t want to face. You’ve no doubt heard the expression “denial is more than a river in Egypt.” The story of the Ascension of Jesus illustrates the flip side of that phenomenon. We human beings will sometimes gape at some problem or difficulty — which some wag called disaster porn. Often do we hear a traffic report of “rubbernecking delays.” The angelic messengers warn the disciples not to fall into that trap. They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?” Yes, we need to look up and see what is really happening but we can’t stop there. We have to respond to what is happening. The angels wanted the disciples to understand that following Jesus is not a spectator sport but requires our action as the response to what we have heard and seen.
