St. Paul went to Athens, the center of education and learning in the ancient world, the home of Plato and Socrates, the cultural capital of the Roman empire. He was country come to city. He wanted to show he belonged. He wanted to be smart and sophisticated. “You Athenians, I see that in every you are very religious.” This sermon was a flop. Paul learned that the way to faith was not through philosophy and argumentation but through a personal encounter with Jesus. He tells us that after this incident “I decided to preach nothing but Christ Jesus and him crucified.” Pope Francis stresses that it is not the catechism that leads to faith but a relationship. Evangelization is coming to know a person.
