When Moses sought to see God he was permitted only to witness God’s retreating back. God is too big, too much for a human being to handle. The apostle Philip wishes to see God and Jesus reminds him that he already has! “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?” While we can’t know everything about God, everything we know about God we know because of Jesus. The word “Incarnation” expresses the fact that God was not content remaining above it all in heaven. God chose to enter into creation in the person of the Son of God, Jesus. Jesus shows us what God is like: the one who loves us unconditionally, the one who forgives us time after time, the one who brings healing and wholeness, the one who has given us a beautiful home to tend and care for, the one who will not be outdone in generosity, the one who is all about life, life to the full.
