After the seasons of Lent and Easter we return to Ordinary Time! The readings for this season are called the lectio continuo where we pick a particular book of the Bible and read it chapter by chapter. This week the first lesson is from the Old Testament book of Sirach, known in the Latin edition as Ecclesiasticus, the Church Book, since its wisdom was formative in the life of the Church. For the next few weeks the Gospel is taken from Mark. Today’s lesson is a reminder that human beings want to get something out of our efforts. Peter began to say to Jesus, ‘We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus responds that what we get comes as a gift not an achievement.
