I might have to re-think preaching at funerals. I usually say something like: “the beloved departed now lives in a richer and fuller eternal life.” But Jesus taught that eternal life begins today. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. We can “know” God and Jesus today. In the Bible “to know” does not refer to something in your head, an intellectual thing. Remember what Mary said at the Annunciation, “I do not know man.” To know has everything to do with intimacy, with connectedness, with relationship. We start to live eternal life when we enter into an intimate relationship with God and feel how close Jesus is to us.
