“All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the field; the grass withers, and the flower wilts; but the word of the Lord remains forever.” St. Peter in his epistle quotes from the Prophet Isaiah on the fleeting nature of human existence. Jesus told the parable of the man who wanted to build bigger barns even staring death in the face. The challenge the Bible holds out is to seek the things that really matter, that last unto eternity. Even the best that have as human beings, like family, will pass. What endures are those virtues which flow from the nature of God — compassion, forgiveness, generosity, love. The apostles in the gospel text wanted to accomplish something, to become someone. Jesus teaches it is not what we have or achieved that lasts but our loving service to those who are woven into our lives.
