The only citation of the Epistle of St. Jude in the lectionary occurs today. The epistle is only twenty-five verses long, after all. But the epistle does demonstrate a Trinitarian faith going back to New Testament times. “Build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The phrase “wait for the mercy” caught my attention. The Greek word used implies more than a passive waiting. It could be translated “expect the mercy” or “welcome the mercy” or “be on the watch for the mercy.” In this Holy Year of Mercy a good reminder to stay alert for God’s blessing.
