The readings for each day until Pentecost remind us the presence and action of the Holy Spirit. In the gospels Jesus speaks about the gift of the Spirit. The first reading during the entire fifty days of Easter are from the Acts of the Apostles, the so-called Gospel of the Holy Spirit. The two readings are “theory” and “practice.” For example, the story of Paul and Silas in prison is a lesson in spiritual discernment. Earlier in Acts Peter was liberated from prison. Paul stayed in prison even when it was possible to escape. The way you know what to do is under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In our lives knowing whether to encourage or to chide depends on the Holy Spirit.
