The Areopagus is a hill in central Athens. Looking up you see the Acropolis of the city with the most beautiful buildings. Looking down you see the agora, the city center where the philosophers Socrates and Plato used to walk. St. Paul preached there because he believed the gospel is better than all that culture and history. That’s what you call chutzpah. The sermon was not a success. Arguing from philosophy and logic did not move hearts. So the Apostle tell us that after that he resolved to preach “nothing but Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2). It is not theology and apologetics that moves hearts but witness — witness about how having Christ in our lives gives us hope and joy and love.
