I sought wisdom openly in my prayer … and I will seek her until the end. Wisdom is a big deal in the Bible. One third of the Old Testament is devoted to wisdom, pursuing it, acquiring it, retaining it. Yet in contemporary American culture wisdom does not seem to be highly valued. Knowledge is. Intelligence is. Understanding is. But wisdom? The dictionary says that wisdom is characterized by attributes such as unbiased judgment, compassion, experiential self-knowledge, self-transcendence and non-attachment, and virtues such as ethics and benevolence. Our education system seems geared to getting people into a job and not toward developing the ability not just to know what something is but to think and act valuing things according to their intrinsic worth, not simple utility.
