Isn’t it wonderful that Jesus prays for us as in St. John’s Gospel: “I pray for them… for the ones you have given me.” We pray as Jesus does — praying for others and asking them to pray for us. But what is really going on with such prayers? We aren’t trying to change God’s mind. We trust that God’s will is always for the best. Rather, praying for one another is about establishing right relationships. Everything we have is a gift from God, down to every breath we take. Every person in our life is a gift from God even when they are “one of our own.” Prayer reminds us we don’t need to cling to what is for God continues to gift us.
