The canticle of Mary, the Magnificat, is used every evening in the prayer of the Church. Perhaps over-familiarity has dulled the revolutionary nature of Mary’s words: the mighty are cast down and the lowly lifted up, the hungry are filled and the rich sent away empty. You can understand why Liberation Theologians such as Gustavo Gutierrez see in Mary their patron. Most interesting is that the verbs are all in the past tense — this is not something God is going to do but the way that God acts. Elizabeth said: “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” Mary had confidence in God’s words of peace and justice, and so should we as her children.
