The commandments that Jesus gives takes us out of our comfort zone. “Stop worrying.” “Love your enemies.” Today’s reading: “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” I live on the South Side of Chicago — being afraid is necessary for survival! That caused me to remember that my mother, who had six children, only had one picture on her dresser — that of my youngest brother, Matthew. Answering why that picture, she explained that Matt’s face as he played in the surf at the beach was one of pure joy. Right after the picture was snapped a wave knocked him over and he was afraid. Jesus urges on us the pure joy of abiding safely in God’s world no matter the circumstances, hence unafraid hearts.
