St. Paul continues his missionary journey and ends up in Ephesus, another major city in the empire. Here he goes about building up the newly formed Christian community — “altogether there were about twelve men.” When we think of great preachers we imagine them in vast arenas with thousands of hearers and mass conversions. But that was not Paul’s style — he was retail not wholesale, twelve, not thousands. He worked with individuals to bring them to faith. As Pope Francis calls us to become “missionary disciples” we should think “retail” as well. It is in our one-on-one contacts with people we meet at work, at school, at recreation where we have the opportunity to talk about the good news which is at work in our lives.
