The third epistle of St. John is very short. It contains this provocative comment: you are faithful in all you do for the brothers and sisters, especially for strangers… Please help them in a way worthy of God to continue their journey. While we are not exactly sure who the “strangers” are it is fascinating that St. John calls them “brothers and sisters.” In other words, the obligations of family extend even to those who are strangers. This has direct implications for the current situation in the United States. There are strangers in our country who are seeking asylum. St. John would tell us that that we have to “treat them in a way worthy of God” since they are brothers and sisters to us.
