According to St. Luke the parable of the “importunate widow” is about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. The logic of the parable: if an unjust judge responds to the widow badgering him, “Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? ” What? You can understand why an unjust judge would be susceptible to being harassed into doing the right thing but why would God? God shouldn’t need to be prevailed upon! Doesn’t God give freely — isn’t grace unearned? Maybe the point is not about changing God’s mind but about changing ours. We “call out to God” as a reminder we don’t create our happiness; we are recipients of God’s gifts.
