“‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.” There is a famous painting of this saying from the Book of Revelation. Jesus is holding a lamp and knocking at the door. The artist deliberately did not put a door knob in the picture. He explained that Jesus cannot force the door open. It must be opened from the inside. That image of the spiritual life rings true. God does not compel but invites. We can open our lives to let Jesus in or not — we have a choice. This is true not only on grand scale but in all of the smaller choices we make each day. Where am I being asked to be kinder or more forgiving or more compassionate or more generous today?
