This week we remembered Cardinal Bernardine on the twentieth anniversary of his death. Part of his legacy that continues to echo in the Church is his “seamless garment” approach to issues of life. He reminded Catholics that issues relating to life are not limited to life in the womb but include anything that promotes human existence. This approach picks up a theme that was important to Jesus. “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” As we deal with new political realities we must promote ALL life issues: the end to poverty, the elimination of violence, productive employment, equal justice, adequate health care, etc.
