The entire congregation of Israel decreed that the days of the dedication of the altar should be observed with joy and gladness on the anniversary every year for eight days. Even though the Books of Maccabees is not part of the Hebrew Bible this memorial feast continues to be celebrated by the Jewish people every year — the feast of the Dedication or Hanukkah. Paired as it is today with the story of Jesus “cleansing the temple” it serves as a reminder of the importance of sacred spaces. One Rabbi when reminded that God is everywhere and everywhere the same replied: Yes, God is everywhere and everywhere the same but I am not. Today’s invitation is to find your sacred place to rest in God’s presence.
