The contrast between the two readings designated for today is dramatic. In the Book of Daniel when the king sees the sign of God’s presence his face blanched; his thoughts terrified him, his hip joints shook, and his knees knocked. God was overwhelming. In the Gospel of Luke when Jesus warns us about troubles to come he also consoles us: I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. The forces of this world are not cause for alarm for believers. In this, the last week of the Church’s year, the Bible is telling us to take a long view for that is how God looks at things. Jesus urges “perseverance” or “faithful endurance” when confronting hostility. There is an old poem by Max Ehrmann called “Desiderata” that has this line: “Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God,” That message is consonant with the scriptures for the week — be not dismayed whatever betide, God will take care of you.
