A dear friend is a fisherman. Since I don’t get how enjoyable fishing is to him he explained that fishing helped him to be a better follower of Jesus. After all, his first followers were fisherman. He described three characteristics of fisherman that made them fit followers of Jesus. First, they go where the fish are. They try to think like the fish! Second, they do their own work before they set out fishing — getting themselves ready with the right equipment and bait. Third, they then have to wait. There is a necessary patience when you are fishing. Since we are all called to be apostles those characteristics are ours as well: going out to the “fish,” getting our lives in order, and patience.
