During the month of November Catholics remember the Faithful Departed. This ancient practice is limited by our inability to penetrate the other side of death. Jesus tells us the two things we need to know: that “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob … is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive” and that life after death will be different from life on this earth. When we remember our beloveds who have gone before us we should not imagine that they are tapping their foot, waiting for us to join them in eternity. Rather, since they live in the eternal “now” of God we understand that when out time comes we will all share life in the present tense with them in our heavenly home.
