There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. When we hear St. Paul’s admonition it makes us wonder why the Church is so adamant about the impossibility of women’s ordination. After all, Jesus stressed that it was not biology but fidelity that produceS the blessing. When a woman blessed his mother he responded, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” Deep reflection on the scripture produces what is known as “the development of doctrine.” The doctrine of the Church developed over time its understanding of the immorality of slavery. Can’t there be similar development in understanding women’s role in the Church?
