The Book of Malachi is not often used in the daily readings. It is the last book in the Old Testament in the Christian Bible. We don’t know anything about the prophet — in fact the word “Malachi” means “my messenger” which implies that Malachi might be a title, not a name. The book was written in the time after the Jewish exiles had returned to the Promised Land. They are discouraged because they imagined that once they returned home everything would be coming up roses. It wasn’t. So Malachi’s message was that God wasn’t done yet. “The day of the Lord” is coming where all would be made well. This message resonated with the early Christian preachers who saw in Malachi a foreshadowing of Jesus.
