Despite the prayer of Jesus that “all may be one” Christians are divided. One such division, that between Catholics and Protestants, goes back to the sixteenth century. Martin Luther started a new religious movement by focusing on “faith alone” which he saw as the standard raised by St. Paul. It was not through the law that the promise was made to Abraham … but through the righteousness that comes from faith. Catholics and Protestants, after yelling at each other for five hundred years, have recently entered into dialogue. After respectfully listening to one another they found that everyone believed that faith in Jesus was the foundation of the Christian life. I wonder: would the “culture wars” plaguing the US currently benefit from similar respectful listening.
