Back in the day the Sisters would have us make “spiritual bouquets” for occasions like Mothers’ Day. We would decorate a card and promise to offer ten Hail Marys, Our Fathers, and Glory Bes. I remember wondering “if ten is good twenty must be better.” That kind of thinking shows the danger in trying to pile up spiritual treasure. Jesus warns us against amassing material treasure. Trying to amass spiritual treasure can cause us to forget that nothing is earned, all is a gift. St. Paul writes: By grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. Gratitude is the foundation of the spiritual life.
