Today’s feast is that of the Guardian Angels. Belief in guardian angels goes back to the Bible. Jesus as a faithful Jew believed in guardian angels. “Their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” Throughout the centuries there has been much speculation about how guardian angels function in the life of a Christian. Pope Francis urged believers to have a relationship with their guardian angels. The pope suggested we even name our guardian angels. He looked upon our particular angels as something like what we think of as conscience, a voice pointing us in the right direction. Our culture with its Sgt. Friday “just the facts, Ma’am” mentality does not avert to guardian angels often. The point of this doctrine is that we are being cared for in ways we are not even aware of. As the song puts it, we never walk alone. The presence of God embodied in a guardian angel is always with us to help us in times of doubt or fear, to rejoice when we rejoice and to weep when we weep.
