“I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” This saying of Jesus was a favorite of the founder of my religious congregation, Fr. Thomas Judge, CM, because it expressed the urgency he felt to bring the gospel into the world. He was concerned about what he called “leakage” from the Church. Well, the leak has become a flood so we need that fire today. If we are to make the gospel come alive among contemporary people it will happen when we are “rooted and grounded in love,” as St. Paul puts it. The fire is not a new program or plan but love for our community, love for our neighbors in need, love for the stranger.
