When astronauts talk about their experience of seeing the earth from space they comment on the interconnectedness of everything. The borders and divisions which are so important in the political realm have no place in the big picture of the life of the planet. St. Paul also is urging us to have a big picture view — not of the earth but of humanity itself. Not only are we woven together in sharing earth as our common home we are also connected as the children of God. You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God. Pope Francis has urged believers and, in fact, all world leaders to have policies which recognizes refugees and migrants as “fellow citizens” of the “household of God” which carries more weight than any difference of language, nationality or culture.
