Do you ever wonder if Jesus used to drive the disciples a little nuts. Peter asks a perfectly reasonable question, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?”, and instead of giving an answer Jesus launches into a long story about stewards and servants. That was Jesus’ very deliberate style. By teaching in parables instead of providing answers Jesus invited his disciples (and, hence, us) to understand that we must involve ourselves in coming to an answer. It has to be our answer, not one imposed on us from outside. While we might wish that we had a direct pipe-line to God’s will that is not how Jesus operated. We seek God’s will, risk making a choice and then rely on God’s mercy.
