The human tendency is to divide the world up into “us and them.” The modern world’s divisions — blue state/red state, black folk/white folk, Cub fans/Sox fans — is merely the latest manifestation of this phenomenon. Paul railed against it, preaching unity again and again. He tells us that the divisions that we see, the differences that are there, pale to insignificance in light of the underlying unity. He calls us to reflect the “oneness” of a life in God — preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace; one Body and one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, During these fractious times Christians must connect with “them” to demonstrate we are one in the Spirit.
