“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” The wise and the learned know how things operate, what is possible, have realistic expectations. The little children imagine a new way of being, dream of what is impossible, and hope for a future beyond the drab current reality. Another thing about little children — they mess up, they make mistakes as they try to make the imagined future come about. In 1963 the so called “children’s crusade” changed Birmingham’s segregation policy. Despite fire hoses the children kept protesting. They were not going to settle for the same old, same old any longer. What are the children leading us to today?
