Job responds to God’s revelation: I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful of me that I cannot know. Contrast that with the disciples returning from their missionary trip talking about their accomplishments. Look at all we have done! Jesus cautions them because soon they would be confronted with the reality of the cross and all that they thought they knew about the ways of God would go out the window. Job’s attitude will stand us in good stead. The ways of God are beyond our ken. Why do bad things happen to good people, as an author asks. The one thing we can be sure of, the one reliable rock on which we can build, is the blessed assurance that we are beloved of God, made in God’s image, and precious in God’s sight. Whether we are driving out demons or picking up our cross the constant in our life is that we are loved. Jesus was just as much the Son of God when he was undergoing his passion and death as he was when he was working miracles. We might not always get what the plan of God is asking of us, but as the Body of Christ, we can trust our identity as Children of God in all things.
