“Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The story of Martha and Mary can be viewed as relating to giftedness. Every individual has their own individual way of serving God in the world. The problem comes when we imagine that one way is better than another. We then start judging why that individual is not doing as much as I am doing. We get resentful and judgmental. Jesus stresses with Martha that her way of serving is not the only way — that Mary’s way would also help in the Kingdom of God. Martha embodies the challenge we all face — to fulfill our calling and trust that others are fulfilling theirs.
