“Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” Jesus replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” This exchange between Jesus and an unnamed woman contradicts Freud’s assertion that “biology is destiny.” It was not biology, Mary’s physical motherhood, that is the source of her dignity. Rather, it was her fidelity to the word of God. Biology, as expressed in national origin, is not destiny either. Just because someone is Polish or Mexican or Italian does not mean they are Catholic. The faith is not inherited by blood but claimed by one’s willingness to hear the word of God and keep it. Culture is only a road we can use coming to faith.
