Those of us of a certain age remember an old TV show called Mission: Impossible. (Not to be confused with the movies of the same name.) It always opened up with Peter Graves (“Mr. Phelps”) looking at photographs of those who would be on the “impossible mission” team. He chose them based on some skill or ability that they had. The gospel shows Jesus going through a similar process of choosing his “team,” the apostles. But the gospels demonstrate that they were not a group with particular skills or abilities — in fact, they seemed remarkably inept. Jesus chose them because he saw a great potential in them. So with us. Jesus sees in each one of us the potential to be apostles in everyday life.
